How it works

Behind the numbers

01

Enter clock-in and clock-out for each day, plus unpaid break minutes. Times convert to decimal hours automatically. Leave a day blank for a day off, and a clock-out earlier than clock-in counts as an overnight shift.

02

Choose the overtime rule. Federal FLSA pays 1.5x for hours over 40 in a week. California pays 1.5x after 8 hours in a day and 2x after 12. The math is shown per day and for the whole week, so you can check it.

03

Pick exact times or quarter-hour rounding under the 7-minute rule, which rounds each clock-in and clock-out to the nearest 15 minutes. This is a planning estimate, not legal or payroll advice; state rules change, so check your state labor department.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How is overtime calculated under federal law?

The Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Weekend hours only count as overtime if they push the weekly total past 40. Select Federal (FLSA) above and the calculator applies that rule.

How does California daily overtime work?

California requires 1.5x after 8 hours in a day and 2x after 12 hours in a day. Select California and the calculator applies the daily rule to each day separately. Seventh-day rules are not included.

What is the 7-minute rounding rule?

A payroll practice allowed under federal law: clock times round to the nearest quarter hour. Times from :01 to :07 round down, :08 to :14 round up, and so on through the hour. Choose quarter-hour rounding above to apply it.

Do weekend hours automatically count as overtime?

Not under federal law. Only hours beyond 40 in the week earn the overtime rate. Under California's daily rule, a long Saturday can trigger daily overtime on its own.

Are unpaid breaks subtracted?

Yes. Enter unpaid meal or rest break minutes for each day and they come off that day's total before any overtime math runs.
