Score needed on the final

How it works

Behind the numbers

01

The core formula is simple: your final grade equals your current grade times the non-final weight, plus the exam score times the final's weight. Solving for the exam score gives (target minus current times one-minus-weight) divided by the weight. That is the score you need.

02

When that number comes out above 100, the target is mathematically out of reach, and the page says so instead of printing an impossible number. It shows the best a perfect exam can achieve and how many points short that falls, so you can decide about extra credit or a lower target. A negative result means you are already above target.

03

The category mode averages homework, exams, and anything else by weight, normalizing when weights do not sum to 100. The what-if table lists exam scores from 0 to 100 and the course grade each produces, highlighting the rows that meet your goal. Letter grades use the standard US bands, with letters converting at band midpoints.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need on my final to get an A?

It depends on your current grade and the final's weight: with an 88% average and a final worth 25%, you need a 96% on the final to finish at 90%. Enter your own numbers above; the calculator gives the exact score.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

Then the target is unreachable by the final alone. The calculator shows the highest grade a perfect 100% final can reach, so you know exactly how short you fall and can ask about extra credit or adjust the target.

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Each category's grade is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the sum is divided by the total weight. An 85% exam category worth half your grade contributes 42.5 points to the final average.

Do all schools use the same letter grade bands?

No. The common US scale is A at 90 and above, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60, but some schools shift these or use plus and minus grades. Check your syllabus; the bands here follow the standard scale.
