How it works

Behind the numbers

01

Every gravel estimate follows the same chain: length times width times depth gives cubic feet, divided by 27 gives cubic yards, and multiplied by the material's density gives tons. Depth is where most hand calculations go wrong: four inches is a third of a foot, not 0.4. The calculator converts units before doing anything else.

02

Density changes more across gravel types than most people expect: pea gravel runs about 1.3 tons per cubic yard while crushed limestone runs about 1.5, which swings the tonnage for the same driveway. These are typical values from supplier weight tables; the page lists each one and you should confirm with your own supplier. The compaction percentage adds the extra material that settles when the layer is rolled. Base layers need more than top layers.

03

Build the driveway in layers, the way contractors do: a compacted crusher-run base with a decorative top layer is the standard sandwich. Each layer is computed separately and then summed, the waste allowance covers spillage and settling, and the price and delivery fee are editable estimates so the project total reflects your local numbers.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

It depends on the material: pea gravel runs about 1.3 tons per cubic yard, crushed stone (#57) about 1.45, and crushed limestone about 1.5. For quick estimates many contractors use 1.5 tons per yard, but picking the right material here gives a tighter number.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

A typical residential driveway is 4 to 6 inches total: about 4 inches of compacted crusher-run base with 2 inches of decorative top material. Much deeper and you are paying for stone that adds little strength; much thinner and the base shows through.

What is the difference between crusher run and pea gravel?

Crusher run is angular crushed stone mixed with fine dust that locks together when compacted. It is the standard base layer. Pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone that does not compact well, so it works as a top layer for paths and patios but not as a structural base.

How much does gravel cost?

Bulk gravel is usually priced by the ton or cubic yard, plus a delivery fee per load. The calculator defaults to $45 per ton with a $150 delivery fee as editable starting estimates. Replace both with your supplier's quote for a real number.
