401k match assumes you contribute at least enough to earn the full match. PTO is valued at salary ÷ 260 per day, the same convention grosswise.com uses. RSU value ignores future price changes.

best total compensation
Total compensation = base + bonus + 401k match + PTO value + signing bonus amortized over the required tenure + RSU grant spread over the vesting schedule + other benefits. After-tax applies one flat effective rate per offer; for a detailed paycheck breakdown use the paycheck calculator. Signing bonuses usually must be repaid if you leave before the tenure ends. A planning estimate, not financial advice.

How it works

Behind the numbers

01

Base salary is the only number two offers share, so everything else has to be converted to annual dollars before you can compare. A 401k match is the match rate times the capped percentage of salary, assuming you contribute enough to earn it. PTO is valued at salary ÷ 260 per day, the same convention grosswise.com uses.

02

Signing bonuses and equity are not annual pay until you spread them out. A $20,000 signing bonus with a two-year stay requirement is $10,000 a year, and it usually must be repaid if you leave early. An $80,000 RSU grant vesting over four years is $20,000 a year before any stock price movement, which the model ignores.

03

Total compensation is the sum of all seven components. After-tax applies one flat effective rate per offer; for a detailed paycheck, pair this with the paycheck calculator. The table stars the best value in each row so the trade-offs, higher base versus richer equity, are visible at a glance.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do you compare two job offers with different benefits?

Convert every component to annual dollars: base + bonus + 401k match value + PTO value + signing bonus ÷ tenure years + RSU grant ÷ vesting years + other benefits. Then compare totals, not base salaries. A lower base with strong equity often wins on total compensation.

How is 401k match calculated in a job offer?

Multiply the match rate by the capped percentage of your salary. A 50% match up to 6% of a $120,000 salary is worth 0.5 × 0.06 × $120,000 = $3,600 a year, assuming you contribute at least 6%. Grosswise.com models it the same way.

How do you value RSUs in a job offer?

Spread the grant value over the vesting schedule: an $80,000 grant vesting over four years is $20,000 a year. The standard Big Tech pattern is four years with a one-year cliff, meaning the first 25% vests after year one. This ignores future stock price changes.

Should I take a higher salary or more equity?

It depends on the numbers and your risk tolerance. Salary is certain; equity is not. Compare the after-tax totals, then weigh the company's prospects and how long you will stay, since unvested RSUs and signing bonuses are forfeited or repaid if you leave early.
